Q: What OTHER ITEMS do I need?

BRICKS * BRICKS * BRICKS

Two standard household masonry bricks work well as a book-press
and stabilizer in helping you make your book. Wrap & tape the bricks.
Then you are set to go.

Note: Make sure the bricks are dry. Not just plucked out ot the garden.
(Moisture and paper do not work well together.)

Q: What kind of book will I learn to make?

PERSONAL LIBRARY—

The BookMaaker™ kit teaches
hands-on book structure

as you make two 96-page
quarter-bound
'flat-back' (using a spine)
journal-size hardcover blank books.

AVERAGE COMPLETION TIME:
First book: 3-hours.
Second book: 1-1/2 hours

Once you have made a book, you will then be able to apply your knowledge to designing, formatting, and creating your own limited edition books.

[Not Included: Content-formatting instructions or software.]

Q: What is a flat-back book and what is a spine? What does 'quarter-bound mean?

The side of a book where titling resides is called the 'spine' side.

A 'flat- back' book is a book that is reinforced with a hard spine, creating a squared-off back rather than a rounded back.

'Quarter-bound' refers to the fact that the book has the binding wrapped partially around spine-side of the book.

Q: If each book in the kit is 96-pages, why are there only 24-writing papers per book?

There are 4-book pages to one sheet of writing paper.

The traditional book is made with folded pieces of paper called 'folios' which are single folded and then grouped into 'signatures'.

Q: What if I want a different number of pages for my book?

Simple Rule: The thickness of a book is determined by the width of the spine.

Keep the book content thinner than the spine.

Q: What if I want to add pictures or momentos inside the book?

Create 'shims' (spacers) to keep the book from fanning out.

Just cut away portions of the folios to create the space, thereby keeping the structure in its traditional shape.

Be creative. Use deckle-edged scissors and cut the paper off in unusual ways. Use onion skin paper or decorative tissues to frame and overlay the treasures.

Q: Why do you use two glues in making a traditional book?

At certain stages, a thicker more flexible glue is needed,

Q: Can I use my own cover material when I make the books that come in The BookMaaker™ kit?

Of course. Just keep whatever you use for the cover material: paper or fabric thin enough to allow for sharp crisp-looking corners.

Photocopies of photographs are great. Wrapping paper is good, too.
REMEMBER: Ink jet printers do not have fixed ink.
Best to photocopy what cover ideas you create on your computer.

Q: I have made the books from The BookMaaker™ kit. How can I make more? Do I have to buy another kit?

We carry supplies to make three different size books.

The BOOK-OF-AGES™ Kit (Medieval Bookbinding)

FAQ'S: The BOOK-OF-AGES™ Kit

In 4th Century AD, the use of scrolls were replaced by flat folded sheets which were protected between boards, then wrapped with leather. This introduced a number of open-back binding formats.

PP-Press offers an open-back style binding it has named `The Book-Of-Ages'. One continuous waxed linen thread is used to incorporate the hand-punched bookboards with the fine deckle-edged writing and endpapers.
