Two
standard household masonry bricks work well as a book-press
and stabilizer in constructing your book. Wrap & tape the bricks.
Then you are set to go. They also make good bookends.
Note: Make sure the bricks are dry. Not just plucked out ot
the garden.
(Moisture and paper do not work well together.)

Q:
Can I print on the writing papers offered by PP-Press?
Yes.
PP-Press offers premium-quality acid-free writing papers in classic
natural white, carrying the weight of tradition with its smooth opaque
character.
Q:
What is a spine and what is a flat-back book?
The
side of a book that repesents the 'thickness' of a book is called
the 'spine' side.
A
'flat- back' book is a book that is reinforced with a hard spine,
creating a squared-off back rather than a rounded back.
Q:
If each book in the kit is 96-pages, why are there only 24-writing papers
per book?
A
traditional book is made with sheets of writing paper folded in half
(called 'folios') which are grouped into 'signatures'.
There
are 4-book pages to a folio. 24- folios equal 94-pages.
Q:
What if I want a different number of pages for my book?
GOLDEN
RULE: The Key To Creating A Good Looking Book:
The thickness of a book should be equal-to or less-than the
width of the spine.
The
total number of book pages is your design.
You can replace kit papers with your own papers.
Q:
What if I want to add pictures or momentos inside the book?
Create
'shims' to keep the book from fanning out.
A
Shim: Just cut away portions of the folio-page [replacing the paper-thickness
lost with your photo/insert].
Be creative. Use deckle-edged scissors to shim/cut in unusual ways.
Use onion skin paper or decorative tissues to overlay the photo/insert.
Q:
Why do you use two glues in making a traditional book?
At
certain stages, a thicker more flexible glue is needed,
Q:
Can I use my own cover material when I make the BookMaaker kit
books?
Yes.
Cover material fabric or paper should be thin enough to allow for
creating sharp edges and corners in the folding/gluing. Paper is preferred
and easier to mount.
Suggestions:
Copies of photographs, gift wrap, magazine clippings, greeting cards,
decorative tissues for overlays.

The
BOOK-OF-AGES Kit (Medieval Bookbinding)
FAQ'S:
The BOOK-OF-AGES Kit
In
4th Century AD, the use of scrolls were replaced by flat folded sheets
which were protected between boards, then wrapped with leather. This introduced
a number of open-back binding formats.
PP-Press
offers an open-back style binding it has named `The Book-Of-Ages'. One
continuous waxed linen thread is used to incorporate the hand-punched
bookboards with the fine deckle-edged writing and endpapers.
